Tony Winner David Hwang To Speak at AAJA Conference

TJ DeGroat

Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang will be keynote speaker at the Asian American Journalists Association's (AAJA) 15th Annual National Convention August 7-10 in Dallas, Texas.

Hwang was awarded the 1988 Tony for his Broadway debut, M. Butterfly. He also received a Tony nomination in 1998 for his most recent play, Golden Child. He is currently represented on Broadway as co-author of the book for Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida, winner of four 2000 Tony Awards. Hwang also co-wrote the song "Solo" with composer/performer Prince.

Hwang's appearance exemplifies this year's convention theme, "The New Frontier", which focuses on the continuing contributions of Asian Americans in all fields.

"Hwang is a role model not just for Asian Americans but all Americans in general," said Rene Astudillo, executive director for AAJA. "He has reached a level of achievement in a field that few have had the courage and perseverance to pursue. He is definitely a newsmaker."

AAJA, which was founded in 1981 and has nearly 1,800 members nationwide, works to promote fair and accurate coverage of Asian Americans in the news.

Other plays by Hwang include FOB, The Dance and the Railroad, Family Devotions, The Sound of a Voice, and Bondage. Upcoming productions include the book for a new musical, Largo. His libretti include two works for composer Philip Glass, 1000 Airplanes on the Roof (International Tour) and The Voyage (Metropolitan Opera), as well as The Silver River (Spoleto Festival USA) with music by Bright Sheng. Hwang also co-wrote the song "Solo" with composer/performer Prince.

Hwang penned the feature films M. Butterfly, Golden Gate, and the upcoming Possession (co-writer), starring Gwyneth Paltrow, directed by Neil LaBute. He is currently writing an original screenplay set in the London art world for Michael Douglas and MGM.
